Prayers for the Great Lakes

O Lord God Almighty, who hast set the great waters in their places and appointed the bounds of the lakes and seas: We give thee thanks for the inland seas of North America, for their beauty and provision, for the communities sustained by them, and for the generations who have labored upon their shores.

Preserve all who travel upon these waters. Grant wisdom to mariners, courage to rescuers, and peace to those who dwell beside the lakes.

Teach us also to behold thy majesty in creation and thy power in the storm; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O God, whose Spirit moved upon the face of the waters at the beginning of creation: Bless, we beseech thee, Lake Erie and all who live, labor, and worship beside her shores.

Preserve the ports and towns, the fishermen and sailors, the churches and homes of this region. Grant prosperity without greed, industry without exploitation, and community without division.

Let thy mercy be as constant as the waters, and thy peace as wide as the horizon; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O Lord Christ, who didst rebuke the wind and calm the raging sea: Be present with all who endure storm and danger upon the Great Lakes.

Protect the fearful, strengthen the weary, guide the lost, and uphold those who keep watch through darkness and tempest.

Grant that amid the uncertainty of wind and wave, thy people may find refuge in thee, who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen.

O Eternal God, protector of all who voyage upon the waters: Guard thy servants who labor upon the Great Lakes and inland waterways.

Preserve them from accident, ice, storm, and despair. Bless their homes and families, reward honest labor, and bring them safely unto their desired haven.

Grant unto all mariners steadfast hearts and abiding faith in thee; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Almighty God, who hast gathered peoples and nations beside rivers, ports, and inland seas: Bless the harbor cities of the Great Lakes and all who dwell therein.

Remember those burdened by poverty, addiction, violence, loneliness, and economic hardship. Strengthen the ministries of thy Church within these communities, that hope may flourish where despair once dwelt.

Raise up faithful servants, just leaders, compassionate neighbors, and courageous witnesses to thy Kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O Lord, whose mercy endureth through every season: Sustain thy people through the cold and darkness of winter.

Protect those who travel dangerous roads and frozen waters; shelter the poor and unhoused; comfort the isolated; and preserve all who labor through snow, wind, and bitter night.

As the earth awaiteth the coming of spring, so strengthen us to await with patience and hope the coming of thy Kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O God, from whom cometh every good and perfect gift: Bless all who labor upon the waters and along the shores of the Great Lakes.

Remember fishermen, dockworkers, sailors, mechanics, steelworkers, first responders, and all whose hands sustain the life of these communities.

Grant them safety in labor, dignity in work, and rest from weariness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O Merciful Father, whose voice the waters obey and whose love extendeth even unto the depths: We remember before thee all who have perished upon the Great Lakes and inland seas.

Receive them into thy eternal rest and comfort those who mourn their loss.

Grant that we, mindful of the frailty of human life and the power of the waters, may place our trust not in earthly strength, but in thy unfailing mercy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O Lord Jesus Christ, who didst call fishermen to be apostles and makest thy Church a vessel of salvation amid the storms of this world: Bless thy Church upon the Great Lakes.

Strengthen bishops, priests, deacons, and all the faithful. Grant reverence in worship, courage in witness, holiness in life, and steadfastness in trial.

Make thy Church a harbor for the weary, a light in darkness, and a refuge amid the storms of this age; for thou livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Ghost, one God, now and forever. Amen.
